NATIONAL CFL EXCHANGE PROJECT

Label for Room Air Conditioners

As part of efforts to solve the energy crisis in 2007 brought on by the low rainfall into the Akosombo Dam, the Government of Ghana implemented an Energy Foundation recommendation to import Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) for free distribution to the public to replace installed incandescent lamps. Six (6) million CFLs were imported by government for the exercise.

The Energy Foundation implemented the national distribution of the six million Compact Fluorescent Lamps which involved a one for one exchange of the CFL with installed incandescent lamps, and the accounting and destruction of the retrieved incandescent lamps.

Fluorescent lamps at security agencies were also replaced with energy efficient T5 fluorescent lamps to reduce their energy consumption. The programme was preceded by an extensive public education campaign to educate the public on the programme?s rationale and modalities and the need to make a permanent switch to the Compact Fluorescent Lamp. An estimated reduction in energy peak demand of 120MW was realized at the end of the exchange programme in first quarter 2008.

Outreach Programmes
The Energy Foundation has embarked on an Outreach Programme to educate the public on energy conservation methods and benefits. The Foundation through agencies based in various localities organizes Energy Festivals and Community Energy Durbars. These fora have been organized in the New Juaben Traditional Area, Asante Mampong and Jasikan, Axim, Hohoe and Asiakwa. At such functions, energy and fuel conservation brochures, flyers, car stickers and other energy efficiency materials are distributed to educate the participants. The Foundation is also implementing a Programme to partner with Traditional Authorities to help spread energy conservation concepts and practices to an increased number of people. The Foundation has made presentations on Energy Conservation at meetings of the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi, the Western Regional House of Chiefs in Takoradi and the Gbi Traditional Council, Hohoe.
